KAFO, knee immobilisation orthosis, prefabricated


Orthosis supposed to stabilise the knee through locking it during standing and walking. The user can unlock the knee for sitting or the locking is controlled by the load on the orthosis. Functions during standing and walking as a static orthosis.

Different versions exist, such as:
* metal bars and joints, cuffs/straps of leather and/or synthetic lining on a metal sole inside the shoes or attached to the shoes
* also with an inner sandal to stabilise the ankle joints.

Custom fitted on the patient or trace-drawing of the patients thigh-knee-ankle-foot.

* hyperextension of the knee
* varus or valgus deformities
